The Environmental Healthcheck, launched this week at the PPA Magazines 2002 conference, is a software application designed to allow printers to assess, monitor and improve the environmental impact of their operations.
The scheme has eight levels from "foundations" up to the top level of "public reporting". It is not audited, but it can be, and around a quarter of participating firms will be visited by an auditor from the Sustainable Office Forum.
It is a confidential system so publishers will not have access to every area of a printers business but will instead receive an external report listing the levels the printer has achieved and stars gained in areas such as water and chemical use.
The scheme could be rolled out to any area of the print industry and the BPIF and PPA are hoping for a launch within four to six weeks. It will be heavily subsidised for BPIF members.
