The Finnish paper maker started the certification process at its Kymi mill in Finland in 1995, and the process was completed at its Miramichi mill in Canada in July this year. It was also certified to OHSAS 18001 for occupational health and safety.
The aim of the environmental management certification is to minimise the environmental impact of the whole production chain.
Most of UPM's European mills have been registered to the European EMAS system.
The production of pulp and paper causes most of UPM's environmental load. Total annual production for UPM is around 12m tonnes of paper and 2.5m tonnes of chemical pulp.
