Month-on-month figures showed an increase of almost 26% to 542,075. However, because of the usual jump in sales between December and January, the year-on-year increase of 21.32% was the key indicator of a sales rise.
"This is our highest sale since we acquired the Observer [from Lonrho] in 1993 and demonstrates that the Berliner Observer has gained trial and reappraisal from a large audience," said Guardian Newspapers chief executive Carolyn McCall.
The Berliner Guardian enjoyed relative success with its 4.8% year-on-year increase highest among the nationals.
