21 colour set to invest in new digital press

21 Colour is preparing to invest up to 400,000 on a new digital press as it looks to increase its presence in the direct mail sector.

Managing director Trevor Price (pictured right) said a final decision had yet to be made but a deal with Xerox was on the table that would see the Glasgow firms DocuColor 6060 replaced with an iGen3.

"Well make a decision in the next six weeks," said Price. "Weve got a contract that, if we win, will mean well need the new press a lot sooner."

He declined to comment on the nature of the contract, except to say that it would involve the printing of unique one-off documents necessitating the digital kit upgrade.

Should the company fail to win the contract, the digital spend will be put back to September, allowing time to explore options with a number of manufacturers.

The investment will take the firms total kit-spend for the last year to 2.2m, following the purchase of two Roland 500 presses, and a new binder and Prinergy workflow.
