Young Stationers’ calls for nominations

Youthful high achievers in print and packaging are being urged to enter a revamped awards competition.

The fifth annual Young Stationers’ Prize is open for entries but instead of one overall winner, this year there will be five winners. The awards recognise outstanding talent in people aged under 40.

The five categories include one for print, paper, and packaging while the others are for journalism and communications; office products and supplies; publishing, digital and design; and books and archiving.

The competition is run by the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers, the 47th Livery Company of the City of London.

“It was originally brought in as a single prize but interest has grown, so we made it into five awards,” said Young Stationers' chairman Dominic Graham.

“But it also recognises the breadth of trades and professions covered by the organisation. As a judging panel we found it hard comparing a printer to a journalist, for example.

“Having five awards gives us a better range from which to acknowledge upcoming talent across a broader range of industries within the overall industry.”

Graham said judges were looking for what people have achieved in their career and how they had contributed to the sector, maybe through training, mentoring, outreach or charitable work.

Prizes will be presented at a gala dinner in Stationers’ Hall on 16 July 2018 and the awards are open to members of the Stationers' and non-members.

An overall prize winner will be selected from the winners of the five gongs, on the basis of their career success, contribution to the sector in which they are working, or broader achievements.

Past winners are: Ian Buckley, managing director of Prima Software; Ella Kahn and Bryony Woods, founders of Diamond Kahn & Woods Literary Agency; Angela Clarke, novelist, playwright, and columnist; and Katie Glass, of the Sunday Times.

The deadline for applications is Friday 15 June 2018 and applications should be sent by email to ys@stationers.org
