Scottish printer to give staff day off for referendum

Staff at Dumbarton-based JJR Print are to be given an extra day's leave this month to take part in Scotland's historic independence referendum.

Iain Robertson, director of JJR Print, described next week's vote on whether Scotland should remain part of the UK as "the biggest decision Scotland will take in my lifetime".

He added that while he was "a big Yes supporter and member of Business for Scotland" he was not telling his staff "how to vote or what to do".

"We're giving our staff this extra day because we respect the work they do with us and we think it's important that they have the time to get out and do what they need to do on polling day," said Robertson.

"It would be good to think that other businesses would think about doing the same thing and allowing staff an extra holiday but I know that different businesses have different needs and many won't be able to.

"I'm looking forward to the vote, I hope it's Yes, and I hope JJR staff will make sure they get fully involved in this once-in-a-generation event."

The Scottish referendum will be held on 18 September. If the SNP succeeds in getting a Yes vote, Scotland could declare independence on 24 March 2016 (allowing time for negotiations between the Scottish and UK governments).

According to the latest YouGov poll, the Yes campaign now has a two point lead over the Better Together campaign to keep Scotland in the UK.

The poll, conducted between 2-5 September, puts the Yes vote at 47% and No at 45%; excluding undecideds and those who don't intend to vote, the result was 51% Yes and 49% No.
