New year predictions: Gary Peeling, Precision ProCo Group

Peeling: You can’t communicate pessimism
Peeling: You can’t communicate pessimism

It’s safe to say that 2020 has been an eventful year for everyone, but when you throw a mid-pandemic mega merger into the mix then it’s probably been particularly so for the new group’s always positive CEO.

If possible, what positives are you able to draw on from the experiences of 2020?
I looked for more support from colleagues, suppliers, clients, partners, bankers, landlords, local authorities, even the government than anyone could reasonably expect and received it which was humbling and shows business-wise nothing is impossible.

What trend (business or technology) do you think has been accelerated because of the pandemic?
Online and e-commerce business models by about five to ten years and that is the most mega of mega-trends.

What do you think will represent the single biggest opportunity for printers in 2021 and why?
E-commerce parcels need print in them (not just packaging) and there are billions. And opening a parcel is a physical experience and will never be digital, it is the #1 growth market and it really needs print. Also the clients come in all shapes and sizes with new ones starting up every day, we just need to connect, happy new year.

What are your hopes for 2021?
That we all keep using the collaborative, innovative, determination we showed in 2020 to survive and refocus it to thrive with the same pace, because if we do the next decade could be the best society has ever seen.

We can't believe we're asking this question for the fourth year running: what is your one-word view on Brexit?
Humbug.

What was the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
You can’t communicate pessimism to the people around you, it's ruinous and no one wants to follow a pessimist.

What, if anything, will you do differently in 2021?
Work from the shed on Mondays. I hate Mondays (been saying that for years).

Sprouts: yes or no?
Yes.

Are you making any New Year's resolutions? If so, what?
Be Brilliant Together.
