Gavin has spent 27 years in the industry having fallen into print following a chance encounter at a service station – really! He and his partner Sarah have a daughter Mia who is nine-and-a-half. Outside of work he’s also involved with indoor and outdoor show jumping.

What is your nickname? 

Better ask the staff that one

Why did you get into printing? 

Totally by chance. I was a time-served engineer and got talking to a chap at Woodall services on the M1 who worked in the industry and invited me to attend an interview for a sales job. The company was Canon UK

What would be your dream job? 

I’m in it. The day I stop wanting to go to work to do my job I will change it

What is your dream bit of kit? 

We’ve just installed the Vivid Matrix MX-370P laminator and foiling machine which so far is superb

What is your favourite TV show? 

Anything by Abbott & Costello (I’m old) and more recently Breaking Bad

Who or what do you hate the most? 

Staff who leave cups and plates in the kitchen sink. I throw them in the waste bin

What is your favourite saying? 

We are what we are and we do what we do!

What is your favourite album? 

Currently anything by The Last Shadow Puppets

Cat or dog, or…? 

Cat, but we also have three horses

What is your greatest luxury in life? 

Spare time and those bloody horses!

Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with? 

Bear Grylls

What is your greatest ambition? 

to build a saleable business

What’s your greatest fear? 

Failing to build a saleable business. And heights!

Who or what makes you laugh? 

Abbott & Costello and Laurel & Hardy

What piece of kit would you like to see invented? 

Wide-format printer that automatically changes substrate on the roll and sets itself up. Is this invented yet?

Most embarrassing moment? 

See worst fashion disaster

Where would you like to be right now? 

Somewhere sunny on a beach

What’s your worst fashion disaster? 

A lime green suit I wore to my sister’s wedding when I was 22. It sends shivers down me even now!

Who would be your favourite party guests? 

Abbott & Costello, Dynamo the magician, Richard Branson, Margaret Thatcher. I think that mix would work 

What is the worst kind of print? 

The bills that land on my desk

What advice would you give to your teenage self? 

Who you hang around with matters – a lot

How would you like to be remembered? 

My friends say this would be my epitaph: ‘Not having a mad one tonight’ and invariably it gets very messy!

Shit happens, deal with it. Live life to the full with no regrets
