Industry unfazed by Heidelberg move

Heidelberg’s decision to withdraw from a clutch of post-press markets, in either a sales or manufacturing sense (and in some cases both) seems to have been met by a fairly muted response.

If finishing fails to establish standards it risks being commercially unviable

Such is the prevalence of standards in the print industry these days that you would be forgiven for thinking that even the car parks were subject to some independently verified rules. ISO 14001, ISO 12647, ISO 27000 and a great deal more cover everything within our workflow - security, lighting, colour, process and all that lies in between. However, there is one very obvious exception: finishing.

If you want to get ahead, get a niche

We have the poet John Milton to thank for the observation that "they also serve who only stand and wait", subsequently corrupted into that rather backhanded and patronising compliment "good things come to those who wait" and regularly rolled out to acknowledge the contribution to the greater good made by those perceived to be a step or two behind the main event.

Perhaps I haven't always been as attentive as I should in pondering the intricacies of saddlestitching. That all changed the other week, when I idly smoothed open an A5 promotional mailer and my left forefinger encountered the sharp end of an unclinched staple, thereby necessitating some remedial stitching of an altogether different nature.

I've been wondering about trade finishers moving upstream with an eye to digital print. A smart move and perhaps the start of a trend? The BPIF special interest finishers' group has recently been glad-handed down at HP Bracknell's headquarters. A Cheltenham-based finishing specialist has snapped up a nearby digital print supplier. It might be premature to talk up a trend, but it could well be the basis on which to build a creditable proposition.

It is the most up-to-date and comprehensive database of its kind in the UK, holding details of more than 29m business and residential addresses, and for many it is invaluable. Few in the direct marketing industry would dispute this, which is where consensus all but ends on Royal Mail's Postcode Address File (PAF).
