New year predictions: Ali Kaye, CPI

Kaye: hopes publishers will increase their cover price
Kaye: hopes publishers will increase their cover price

Ali Kaye, managing director of CPI's STMA and colour division, sees opportunities in 2023 for printers agile enough to take advantage of them.

What positives are you able to draw on from the experiences of 2022?
Despite the market driven curveballs that continue to come our way, both our customers and our teams work relentlessly together to overcome them.

What trend (business or technology) do you think has been accelerated because of the impact of inflation?
The drive to migrate to digital (online) product over print, however that’s not to say this can’t be overcome. Printers need to work closely with customers to think differently and collectively illustrate where the printed product still has a place and is commercially viable for the long term.

What do you think will represent the single biggest opportunity for printers in 2023 and why
Opportunity is there for those who can remain agile, innovative and challenge traditional models. The entire supply chain has been stretched, it has materially changed since Covid and more recently due to increased inflation. The cost of operation has increased significantly and consequently printers need to carve out a new position within the supply chain, for those who can think and deliver differently there is profitable growth to be secured.

What are your hopes for 2023?
That the strong demand we have seen for printed books over the last two years continues throughout 2023 and that publishers increase their cover price.

What piece of advice do you wish you had been given in December 2021 to prepare you for the year you’ve just had?
I’m not sure this is advice, but full visibility of the future cost of energy would have been helpful!

What was your word or phrase of the year in 2022?
Relentless.

What, if anything, will you do differently in 2023?
Wherever possible, revert back to face-to-face meetings, relationships are simply not developed on Teams. I’m certainly done with seeing myself on screen day after day.

What’s your favourite Christmas cracker joke?
Which city in France has more than one toilet?

Toulouse.

Are you making any New Year's resolutions? If so, what?
Oh crikey, no!
