It has long been recognised that trees are an environmental 'good'. They act as a carbon capture and storage system and the expansion of forestry in Europe has led to many more trees being planted than harvested. By signing up to one of two chains of custody certification systems, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or the Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), the paper industry has up to now been able to demonstrate its commitment to using wood from sustainable sources to make pulp. The UK paper industry sources most of its pulp from Europe.
