In 2002, Ron Fothergill was working in a Blues Brothers show. “Many of the acts we worked asked us to design their posters and leaflets. We saw an opportunity and started off running two machines in our dining room with finishing in the garage.” Ron’s long-suffering wife and partner Lindsay said “enough!” when a third machine appeared in the kitchen! The firm moved into more suitable premises where it continues to thrive.

Battlefield Printing Group started out 25 years ago with a Multilith press in the company owner’s garage. It quickly became known as the ‘friendly print and copy shop’ and built a reputation in Shrewsbury and the surrounding areas.

Balcony Shirts is a printwear shop in West London. Partner Scott Raison explains the back story: “From humble beginnings printing t-shirts in our bedrooms and selling them on eBay, we soon graduated to a Portacabin, which was situated in a truck garage car park. We then moved to a unit on Uxbridge industrial estate, before ending up in our home of the last 10 years, our shop in Uxbridge.”

Established in 1978 above a local delicatessen by husband and wife team John and Pat Kilshaw, Willow Printing & Design has grown into its own factory and from its litho roots into a multi-service operation including digital printing and personalised promotional products. Today, the business is run by the next generation of Kilshaws – brother and sister team Barry (pictured left with a happy customer) and Cheryl.

PPS was set up in 1989 (the year sales director Katie Palmer was born) by her parents Noel and Lesley in the garage of the family home. PPS began by offering photography and marketing services and as the business developed, brought in graphic designers, invested in printing equipment and decided to bring everything in-house to offer the full service.

Bigger Printing was set up in 2000, by MD Sebastian Stanley (pictured right with marketing and operations manager David Bowen). Originally selling print consumables, the company grew into The Bigger Printing Company, specialising in producing large format digital print.

The firm was founded in 1962 as Allsignsgroup, supplying signage to the oil industry before developing a specialism in the construction sector. A re-brand to Octink in 2009, using the image of an octopus to signify intelligent thinking, boldness and adaptability, reinforced the company’s new direction. The firm has just revamped its website, “reflecting our future potential in a very clear way!”

Palmers Print is a family company established in 1977 and now run by brothers Michael and Peter Healey. The firm stopped manufacturing in 2011 to concentrate solely on print management, although it still makes its own proofs and plates.

First Display began life selling advertising space on taxis. “We were sourcing print and couldn’t get the service (timescales, colours, price) so we bought a Roland XC540 which we still utilise to this day,” says director Jamie Bowes.

Imageco’s inception was over 15 years ago. Directors Nathan Swinson-Bullough (left) and Simon Harrison have since put together a team “with vast experience that has helped take us to and keep us at the forefront of large-format print sector”.

Datum started back in 1988 in Shoreditch, London, as a pre-press company supplying plates and proofs to the local litho printers. It left behind its London roots in 2000 when the business relocated to Hertfordshire.
