The world has changed and so must we

The imminent demise of The Independent in printed form, unsurprisingly, triggered a rush of commentators to once again predict the end of printed publications.

CTP: violet grabs 53% of market share

CTP sales are bullish, according to Samir Lukka and Ramu Ramanathan. And the total projection of new CTP platesetter sales in India by various vendors ranges from 900 to 1,200 units till 2015

New chapter in photobook workflow

Over the past three years, demand for personalised digital photobooks, calendars, postcards and yearbooks has increased significantly. As all modern digital printers and presses produce good high-quality colour output, several of the workflow and server vendors have started to address this new opportunity. The question is where in the workflow should these millions of lower-quality images be corrected and enhanced?

Workflow boom is a business boon

The wide-format, inkjet and super wide-format sector of the digital print market should be on your agenda for a closer look in 2008. It continues to grow at well above 10% per year and offers commercial printers and service providers a new revenue stream.

Workflow must check all the boxes

Most of the major suppliers including Agfa, Canon, Kodak, Heidelberg and Xerox are pushing a joint offset and digital production workflow. This strategy could work for large printers and service providers, and the companies spending 250,000-plus on a digital press. However, for the great majority of printers and most of the 9,000 users of colour production digital presses in the UK, this may not be such a good approach.

High hopes for low-cost file-checking

As the number of digital colour presses - or, as I prefer to call them, 'variable presses' - increases, even in this economic downturn, I continue to search for new inexpensive workflow or high-value tools to help service providers.

Colour management removes human error and matches on-press to proof

Print quality is not the differentiator it once was (although finishing quality probably still is, but thats another story). Image quality disqualifies, rather than qualifies, printers for certain jobs. Todays offset presses, allied to CTP, allow excellent reproduction to be achieved pretty straightforwardly.
