Radiant Orchid named Pantone Colour of the Year 2014

Pantone describes its latest Colour of the Year, Pantone 18-3224 Radiant Orchid, as “a captivating, magical, enigmatic purple” that exudes confidence.

Following on from 2013’s Emerald, chosen as a symbol of growth, renewal and prosperity, Radiant Orchid “reaches across the colour wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination”, according to executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute, Leatrice Eiseman.

The X-rite owned global colour matching provider, researches global colour influences in areas such as the film industry, travel destinations, art collections and new artists, sporting events, textile developments and technology.

Eiseman said: “We look at colour very closely from the standpoint of symbolism, and our choice of Radiant Orchid was very deliberate. We feel it is especially meaningful to all facets of the communications industry.”

She said the colour invites innovation and encourages expanded creativity and originality, which are increasingly valued in today's society.

Radiant Orchid can be cross-referenced to all other Pantone libraries including Pantone Plus for graphic design.

Eiseman added: “Experience has shown us that because the Colour of the Year gets so much attention online and in the media, it has become obvious to many product developers as a colour that will 'have legs'.

“As a result, not only do designers and manufacturers see the value of using the colour, but the consumer becomes more aware of the colour as well, and in the end, those are the eyes you are trying to capture.”
