Inca unveils flagship Onsets

Inca Digital has expanded its Onset X family of high-performance flatbed printers with the launch of the Onset X HS (High Speed) range.

The two new models, the Onset X2 HS and the Onset X3 HS, offer a major increase in productivity on the existing X2 and X3 models, utilising a new ‘single cycle’ mode on the X3 HS to print at up to 1,450sqm/hr – more than 50% higher than the top print speed of the original X3.

The Cambridge-based manufacturer said this mode is made possible by the optimisation of the print jetting profiles and jetting frequencies.

Compatible with Inca Digital’s range of application specific robotic handling systems, machine downtime caused by job changes and setup routines has been “dramatically reduced” with the integration of a range of new automated features on the HS machines.

On- and off-loading systems, UV shutter alignment and table skin adjustments have all been automated, reducing operator intervention and bringing job setup time down from an average of 15 minutes to around 30 seconds according to the manufacturer.

The launch is partnered with a new Fujifilm ink range, Uvijet OX, which features a brand new, unique patented ink technology.

Developed and manufactured at Fujifilm Speciality Ink systems in the UK, the inkset has been designed specifically for the Onset X HS printers, to enable them to achieve “exceptional adhesion” on rigid plastic media at the highest printing speeds.

Inca Digital engineering projects director Keith Kenny said: “The aim of this product is to deliver high throughput, but more importantly to reduce operator interaction with our machines to eliminate costly human errors.”

He added he anticipates the increased productivity and automation features on the new models to open new doors for the Onset X range.

“Packaging is an interesting area. Although we definitely see single-pass as being an answer to packaging, we’ve already had some [Onset X] uptake from some packaging customers, and we can see that growing. The faster we can go, the more we can add to that.

“The versatility and the flexibility of the platform is really what we’re selling but moving things more quickly does open new doors.”

The Onset X HS series is commercially available with immediate effect and sold exclusively on a global basis by Fujifilm.

The existing Onset X1, X2 and X3 models, which were launched in 2015, will remain available, though Kenny said that as pricing for the new X2 HS and X3 HS models “will be in a similar ballpark” to the original X2 and X3 models, he does not expect the uptake for those to be significant going forwards.

While specific dates were not disclosed, Kenny said “an upgrade path will be available” in the future for existing Onset X users who want to take advantage of the new features.

A beta of one of the new models is currently running in the field at an unnamed pre-existing customer’s site, which Inca Digital engineering director Paul Baker said “is going very well and is getting very positive feedback”.
