Label Apeel owner Stuart Kellock has concerns about a shortage of young people coming into the industry and believes there should be more done in the way of training.
What’s at the top of your Christmas wish list this year?
Economic and political stability, which is about as rare as red-nosed reindeer poop currently.
What trend (business or technology) do you think 2017 will be remembered for?
Integrity. I think we are seeing lots of businesses being taken to task over past indiscretions - the BBC over inequal pay, Harvey Weinstein and the wider media industry over sexual misconduct. Hopefully we will now see improvements in business integrity.
What do you think will represent the single biggest opportunity for printers in 2018 and why?
Localisation will continue to gain pace, which for the short-run packaging expert like us is a good thing. Small brands wanting to make big impact.
What do you think will represent the single biggest threat for printers in 2018 and why?
The lack of skilled young people coming through.
What’s the one thing that the industry should do more of, or do better, in 2018?
Train more people or invest in zimmer frames for our existing workforce. I know which way I am going!
What was your biggest disappointment in 2017?
When a large local competitor phoned me to tell me he was going to poach all my staff. He didn't succeed because his well-known lack of support for his staff far outweighed the puny salary increases he offered. This highlighted the lack of investment larger organisations are prepared to make.
What was your highlight of 2017?
As always, working with the fantastic team here at Label Apeel. Just the best group of people you could choose to spend 40 hours a week with.
What are your hopes for 2018?
We are going to be entering some awards, so some recognition of everybody's efforts would be lovely.
What was the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
You get out a multiplication of what you put in - and it's always better to use an ointment than to scratch it!
