Don't tell Windles Group to clean up its act, it already has done. First came a company-wide recycling campaign, with main waste streams identified by colour-coded bins. Then came the four-chamber baler dealing with cardboard.

Category sponsor: KBA UK
Windles diversified into plastic substrates including PET and PVC, and so did its recycling. Each waste stream was segregated into cages, not only ringing up a financial return but avoiding trips to landfill sites. A closer look at baled in-house cartons, meanwhile, suggested the team could re-use 70% of them while 15% could be used a third time. Further measures at Long Crendon, Bucks, included splitting waste paper into separate streams to yield more revenue and firing up a new pallet chipper to make briquettes for heating the depot. Finally, staff recycle paper cups, plastic bottles and cans and are to start composting food, increasing the likelihood they eat, drink and sleep recycling.
