Smith: DM cuts through the noise

The service focuses on marketing campaigns for SMEs. It is able to deliver in the UK and internationally. It sends personalised A5 postcards, and A4 letters followed by a series of emails and follow up calls from telemarketing company RLM.

Alastair Smith, owner of Monkey Mail, said direct mail was a way of "cutting through the noise" of other non-physical marketing campaigns.

"The industry changed dramatically when people realised it was possible to launch their own email campaigns. But, although they were cheaper, customers realised they weren’t the most effective way of marketing," he said.

Although Smith is the sole-owner and employee of Monkey Mail, he is working in conjunction with large format printer and graphic designer Monkey Print, whose annual turnover is £300,000.

Monkey Mail products are printed on Monkey Print’s Mutoh 1604 and 1304 Roland Versacamm digital printers.

The guide price for an A5 personalised colour postcard is 55p, including second class delivery. An A4 personalised letter and 4pp full colour leaflet in a C5 envelope costs 75p, also including 2nd class delivery.

Smith said he hoped to generate sales of £250,000 in the first year. He has 13 years' experience in direct mail, having worked as sales director at NEMC and DSI (now DST).
