The countdown to Drupa begins...

With a mere eight weeks to go until the big show opens its doors, the excitement surrounding the impending Drupa in PrintWeek Towers is palpable.

With 1,650 exhibitors spread across 19 halls, what’s not to love?

And there are many other questions too: What will be the hot topic? Will Benny Landa put in another show stealing performance? Will Anton be the biggest UK spender again? And, of course, the biggest question of all: Will the Drupa song that seemed so uplifting on day one take us all to a much darker place come day 11?

The likely answers are: post-press; probably; possibly and positively.

But if I can beg your indulgence to conveniently continue the alliteration, as I write this the only ‘P’ word on everyone’s lips right now is Polestar.

With it going though it’s second pre-pack administration in five years, the ramifications for customers and suppliers are potentially massive as the new business works hard to restore confidence and keep both key groups on board.

While I’m sure the discussions won’t be easy, if modern print history has taught us anything it’s that Polestar and its chief executive Barry Hibbert are two of the industry’s great survivors. Both have shared some pretty bruising experiences since the latter returned to the business in 2001; experiences that could quite possibly have signalled the end for lesser mortals.

But Herculean Hibbert (Atlas is probably a better fit as he must have felt like had the weight of the world on his shoulders, but it doesn’t alliterate quite as nicely) is living proof that in business whatever doesn’t kill you just makes you stronger.

And based on that few would be brave enough to bet against Hibbert and Polestar riding out this latest storm either.
