New year predictions: Simon Biltcliffe, Webmart

Webmart CEO Simon Biltcliffe urges the industry to proactively seek ways to grow customers' top line in 2015 by leveraging data in print.

What’s at the top of your Christmas wish list this year?

The words 'Dear Santa'.

What trend (business or technology) do you think 2014 will be remembered for?

IPhone 6 Plus – in a year all phones will be this size.

What do you think will represent the single biggest opportunity for printers in 2015 and why?

Leveraging data in print. Digital media ‘lands’ the customer, printed media ‘expands’ the customer by cross-selling and lengthening the life value of the new client.

What do you think will represent the single biggest threat for printers in 2015 and why?

The lack of 'data and print' experts - there are loads of one or the other but few of the combo.

What’s the one thing that the industry should do more of, or do better, in 2015?

Listen to customers explaining the trends in their own market and proactively look for ways to grow their top line using data and print.

What was your biggest disappointment in 2014?

Barnsley being relegated. Oh, and slipping a disc last week in training, which has enforced indolence when I should be training two hours a day.

What was your highlight of 2014?

Empowering Webmart by bringing in an inverted leadership structure on a business level and completing an ironman [triathlon] on a personal.

What are your hopes for 2015?

To develop a better way of empowering buyers and sellers of print to trade profitably.

What was the most important thing that you learnt in 2014?

The ethics that drive your business are the most important thing to steer every decision.

What if anything will you do differently in 2015?

Recruit the very best people possible for every role without compromise.

What’s your favourite Christmas cracker joke?

Q: What do you call a deer with no eyes? A: No eye-deer
Q: What do you call a deer with no eyes and no legs? A: Still no eye-deer
Q: What do you call a deer with no eyes, no legs, and no balls? A: Still no fucking eye-deer

Okay, I admit that didn’t appear in a christmas cracker, but if Roger Mellie did a line in crackers, it would, so it counts!

Are you making any new year’s resolutions? If so, what?

No resolutions, just new year solutions - see above hope for 2015!

Who will win the Rugby World Cup in 2015?

Couldn’t care less to be honest.
