Wrights GPX invests £250,000 in new Océ flatbed and Zünd cutter

Plastic product manufacturer Wrights GPX has bought a Zünd G3 XL-3200 cutting system and a Canon Océ Arizona 660 XT flatbed printer, as part of its latest £250,000 investment programme.

The G3 was installed at the West Bromwich-based firm’s 3,902sqm production unit around three weeks ago, while the Arizona 660 XT was installed in October.

Each machine offers a range of benefits and features that the firm is confident will help it to improve finish quality and production times and extend its product and service range.

The 2.5x3.5m high-speed Arizona 660 XT UV flatbed device offers six independent ink channels that can be used to add additional cyan and magenta inks for enhanced quality at high production speeds, or to introduce varnish and white ink for decorative applications.

White ink configurations include varnish plus white, for printing white on non-white substrates, or double-opacity white, to achieve strong opacity in a single printing pass.

The G3 cutting system offers tandem production with loading and unloading occuring on one side so that cutting can continue without interruption on the other. This set-up increases workflow efficiency, keeps idle time to a minimum and maximises throughput.

The cutting surface is divided into two independently controllable vacuum areas, front and back. Each side is equipped with controls for turning the vacuum on and off and resuming production.

Head of standard products Nick Wright said: "We needed to make these investments to keep up with demand. We have another Océ flatbed printer that was running flat out 24/7 and since we’ve had the second one installed it’s been the same on both of them."

Earlier this year the firm bought a Eurolaser LCS 2XL-3200 three-in-one laser, router and knife cutter. It also operates an Océ 1.6m-wide eco-solvent printer, a Summa drag-knife cutter and a Trotec laser engraver.

Wrights GPX has 90 staff, having taken on an extra 15 people during 2014. It is aiming to achieve a turnover of around £10m for the current financial year, up from £6.5m last year, which was itself up 40% on the previous year.

The company produces plastic products as well as vehicle and fleet graphics, exhibition displays, vinyl graphics, shop signage, POS and window graphics to retail and trade clients. Its customers include Tesco, Marks & Spencer and Selfridges.

Last month the business was named Manufacturer of the Year at the Birmingham Post Business Awards 2014, in recognition of its growth, continued investment and increased staff levels during 2014.
