Spectrum Printing purchases new Duetto Booklet System

Cardiff-based lithographic printer Spectrum Printing has invested in a new 600i Duetto Booklet System, to assist with new all-Wales printing service work for local councils.

It previously ran a Duplo 5000 System, but manager Lawrence Corria said it was in need of a faster upgrade and needed to produce quicker print runs.

Corria said of the decision to purchase: “We’ve been with Duplo for years, this is our third machine. This is just a good model. They have put a lot more features on this one. It is the first time this model has been able to do A4 landscape and it is more heavy duty than previous models."

The Duetto Booklet System is fit for both digital and litho work, with a collating tower system used for offset work and a digital sheet feed for feeding pre-collated digitally printed sheets. It has up to six of these collating towers and sheet feeders.

It has a Duplo hybrid system, which uses the features of the DBM600 bookletmaker, such as PC controller, A4 landscape format and multiple feeding.

Corria added: “We are just looking for it to be easier to set up and for semi-skilled operators to be able to use them and that’s the good thing about these systems. With the Mullers you need skilled operators and the way the trade is with staff moving round it is easier just to drop someone on there basically.”

Founded 31 years ago, Spectrum Printing is a family-run company, providing litho printing and finishing services, including brochures, menus, leaflets and various other services. Corria said a 2016 turnover increase is likely after it won the all-Wales contract in March.

It runs a B1 Heidelberg Speedmaster, B3 Heidelberg Speedmaster, a fully-automated Horizon folder, a Polar 115 guillotine and scoring and plate-making facilities. It employs 15 staff in its Cardiff unit.
