Polaroid launches new 3D printer to UK market through Tech Data

A new 3D printer targeting consumers, designers and schools was launched this month by Polaroid, which has appointed a distributor.

Tech Data is the exclusive distributor for the new ModelSmart 250S 3D in the UK and will work with retailers and resellers, targeting the consumer, education and commercial markets.

Polaroid's new device is designed specifically for the consumer market, with a look and feel that aims to blend in with the decor of offices, classrooms or living rooms.

The printer will cost around £1,500 and Tech Data is looking to sign up companies for a multi-tiered partner programme, which will offer a sliding scale of discounts.

The ModelSmart 250S comes with Polaroid Prep software enabling non-experts such as consumers to to print 3D models. 

“With most 3D printers the software is quite difficult, but Polaroid Prep is really, really easy to use. 3D printing is at the cusp of becoming consumer acceptable and Polaroid wants to be there at the beginning," said Tech Data senior category manager Peter Lunn.

Users can import their own creations or a model from a website, scale and print with full visibility of estimated time and filament usage.

It is being brought to market through a three-year partnership between Polaroid and UK-based manufacturer of inkjet cartridges Environmental Business Products (EBP). EBP will be the sole manufacturer of the Polaroid 3D printer and consumables range. 

The ModelSmart 250S can produce model measuring up to 250x150x150mm and features auto-calibration and a vertical resolution of 50 to 350 micron. 

It has a Wi-Fi-enabled camera built in with 12 parameter settings. Nine PLA colours – pink, blue, green, yellow, orange, lime, black, white, silver – and wood are available as base materials. 

A 'smartchip' mechanism on the filament cartridge identifies filament levels and ensures the correct material is used. 

Transparent, double-sided adhesive Z-axis sheets are applied to the print bed for application, adhesion and model removal.
