The firm's latest addition is a Renz P500 ES punch, which went in earlier this year. It joined a Renz AP360 heavy-duty punching system and a Mobi 500 automated binder.

Owner Ian Bradley said that the company started life wire-binding manually, which, because it always tried to never turn work away, meant it ended up taking on book jobs that varied from between 50 and 1,000 copies, which was a time-consuming process.

As a result, it began upgrading its wire-binding around 18 months ago, which supported growth from around £300 to £400 worth of wire binding a month to £3,000 to £4,000 or more in busy months.

Manager Scott Butler said: “In such a short space of time we are doing much more wire-binding work. It is quicker and we can turn around much more volume in a shorter time period.”

“Before we got the kit customers were sending work elsewhere but that was sometimes quite a long way away. The new machine has put us on the map for this kind of work.”

Leeds Die Cutting operates mainly with companies in the Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield and Yorkshire areas. Turnover is £250,000 and it has five employees.

Other kit includes a Horizon BQ-270V perfect binder, Heidelberg SB die-cutting cylinder and Heidelberg platen and a Morgana folder with cross-fold unit.

The Renz P500 ES can handle book- and calendar-punching production with ring wire, plastic comb and coil options.

It enables fast die changes, incorporates two-part split dies for book and calendar work, and there is quick-size adjustment (QSA) for flexibility of different paper formats.

The system offers horizontal paper feeding and the ability to handle a wide range of mixed stocks.

Bradley added: “It was capable of doing what we needed it to do. Having two systems already we knew how reliable Renz solutions are. They are also easy to use and set up.

“The Renz P500 ES allows us to complete a greater range of sizes and has had a knock-on effect on the other services we offer. Now there is more demand for collation and lamination, for example.”
