KJS boosts folding capabilities with Horizon investment

Direct mail and marketing company KJS Print to Mail Services is set to expand its bindery after investing just over £50,000 in a fully automatic B2 Horizon AFC-566FG folder.

The Peterborough-based firm is set to take delivery of the device, which will be supplied by Intelligent Finishing Systems, next week. It follows the April installation of a Sakurai OL 466 LED UV colour press.

KJS managing director Stuart Speechley said: “The Horizon machine gives us more folding capacity and it’s faster. We’ve had two or three smaller folding machines over the years and we just needed more folder power.

“We went brand new mainly because of the technology on it, with the quick setup because of the touchscreen.

“This purchase has always been on the cards since we installed the Sakurai. Going back up to SRA2 from being a B3 printer has meant we needed more firepower in the finishing. We’re looking at updating our stitching lines and guillotines as well.”

The business also looked at a range of other machines but Speechley said the automation on the Horizon device was “far slicker” than any of the alternatives it saw.

“This machine has come in as additional kit. We’ve got a few Morgana UFO folders and we’ve had an old Stahl folder for many years that is a bit cumbersome,” said Speechley.

“We’ve had to manoeuvre a few things around and we’re looking to move our warehouse into the unit next door to us as well and create another machine area where our warehouse currently is.”

KJS, which has 26 staff and a turnover of £3m, serves clients in the financial sector as well as theatres, charities and small enterprises. The business also operates equipment including CMC envelope inserting machines, two Xerox Nuvera 144s and a Xerox 1000 digital colour press.
