For Allan & Bertram, making calendars in Cuffley, Hertfordshire, for 55 years, it’s a fully justified claim to make, coming off the back of a quadruple win at the 2018 World Calendar Awards.
What was produced?
The four calendars boast high-definition print and are bound with wire for a premium finish. Face2Face presents a selection of close-up wildlife photography, Art comprises a showcase of renowned artists living today, Swarez shows off the work of the artist and View compiles lush scenic photography from around the globe.
What did the job entail?
Art, Face2Face and Swarez were all printed on triple-coated LumiSilk stock – an Allan & Bertram standard – while View made use of Queen of Arts Ivory Silk for the pages and Peregrina Majestic Damask Blue for its front cover. All four items were printed on a Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 five-colour with coater. All designs were produced by an in-house team, with reprographics outsourced.
Run lengths for Allan & Bertram vary from 1,000 to 20,000, with different lengths for View (4,000), Art (4,500), Swarez (1,000) and Face2Face (8,000). Rilecart 796 HD binder machines were used to carry out the four/inch wire-binding.
What challenges were overcome?
A standardised method of production is used for all Allan & Bertram calendars so that challenges and variations can be handled with ease by the team.
Managing director Andrew Bennett said: “Our calendars are designed and produced from start to finish at our in-house manufacturing site, which allows us greater control and the ability to react to any potential challenges.”
What was the feedback?
All four calendars won the gold award in their respective categories at this year’s World Calendar Awards, run by the Calendar Marketing Association in Lombard, Illinois, US.
An association spokesperson said: “Since 1989, the Calendar Marketing Association has been conducting our awards to celebrate the artistic and technical talents of calendar publishers around the world. The panel reviewed all the entries and scored them based on each division and category with an overall quality rating. Allan & Bertram scored highest in each of those categories.”
