Version 4.1 of the software uses the Job Definition Format (JDF), a metadata file that enables details about a job’s specification and production status to be passed through the workflow, to integrate production and administration.
JDF is common in commercial print, but has yet to be so widely adopted in wide-format, although it is being driven by HP, with which Four Pees is an alliance partner.
The format is used throughout PrintFactory, with the Editor creating JDF instructions for processing in its own or third-party RIPs, while the RIP can process JDF from the Editor or third-party software, including MIS or ERP software and web-to-print packages.
JDF is also at the heart of the software’s variable-data handling via the Combine Tool in the Editor.
Other new features on PrintFactory 4.1 include pre-flighting, a revised finishing tool for applying folds, tunnels, eyelets, grommets and seams and for nesting jobs to optimise media use.
A new calibration process includes print quality and ink consumption presets asnd enables users to prioritise ink saving, print quality or provide a "best of both worlds" in-between option.
Users of PrintFactory 4.0 can upgrade free to the latest version. The JDF and variable data options are paid for additions.
