Denmaur practices what it preaches

Paper merchant Denmaur Independent Papers has become a carbon-balanced company.

The scheme has been adopted in partnership with the CarbonCo, which works in partnership with the World Land Trust (WLT).

All of Denmaur’s carbon emissions are now being calculated and offset by action to protect threatened habitats. The scheme is overseen in the UK by CarbonCo, which works with WLT in countries such as Vietnam, Paraguay and Ecuador.

CarbonCo also provides a website to promote carbon-balanced paper, logos for carbon-balanced print producers and a WLT carbon certificate for end-users.

Denmaur group marketing director Peter Sommerville said: “This is probably something we were considering for a while. We can carbon balance any product we sell so we thought if we are promoting the service it is slightly disingenuous if we are not seeking to do the same thing with our business.

“Danny Doogan (Denmaur group sustainability manager) looked into it and I was happy to endorse it and submit it to the board for a decision.

“I think it will be commonplace soon and most companies will end up taking this sort of action.”

Denmaur already offers a carbon balancing service on all of its papers, including the Revive recycle brand, which was relaunched in May after an event in London following Denmaur’s purchase of the former Paperlinx brand in October 2015. Speakers at the event included the heads of the WLT and the CarbonCo.

Sommerville said interest in the Revive brand had experienced a “slight slowdown” over the summer months but things had picked up in the autumn.

Denmaur also announced that it has approved a new fleet of 12 energy-efficient Scania trucks to futher minimise its carbon footprint.
