Consumables supplier JAG quadruples footprint

Fledgling printing consumables company JAG has responded to significant growth since its foundation two years ago by moving to a warehouse almost four times the size of its previous premises.

The company, launched in early 2015 by waste specialist J&G Environmental, moved from its 250sqm industrial unit to a 950sqm base next door in Kettering, Northants last month.

Technical sales manager Brian Smith, who heads JAG, said the 15-staff business had clocked up a turnover of over £1m in its short life, jumping 57% on 2016's turnover, which in turn was 54% higher than in its first year.

From six core products at its launch in January 2015, JAG's range now totals 200 products, including branded inks, coatings, sealers and blankets.

JAG and J&G are part of Cleansing Service Group, one of the UK's largest privately owned waste management groups. J&G's clients include 2,700 printers and JAG now supplies 270 of them.

Smith said: “We outgrew our first home in six months even though we had a three-year plan for it and were having to shift materials in and out and all over the place all the time to make space.

“Part of our success is we are not cold calling and knocking on doors, but talking to people we are already trading with and telling them we are diversifying into consumables.

“That is massively different from knocking on the door of someone who's never heard of you before. We have the reputation of J&G behind us and sell tried and tested branded products.”

Alongside the new office and warehouse, the company hopes to take on new staff and has added a van to its fleet.

Smith’s original concept of offering a ‘circular’ service by delivering products and then collecting the waste they create had been embraced by existing and new clients, he said.

J&G Environmental manages waste collection and disposal for print houses and newspaper groups and has diversified into recycling and waste management.
