Rising star: James Taylor Printer, Bell & Bain

James is 22 and started working in the industry just over three years ago, at Glasgow book and journal printer Bell & Bain. Earlier this year he won Apprentice of the Year at Print Scotland’s annual apprentice awards.

What did you study? Electrical engineering

How did you find your way into the industry? Through a friend

Did you know anything about print beforehand? Very little

What does your current role entail? I operate and maintain a Koenig & Bauer Rapida 145 eight-colour long perfector to a specific fast production rate and to a very high quality of work

What’s the most enjoyable or interesting thing about it? The Print Scotland Awards day out

Do you have an ideal career path mapped out? Not at the moment but hopefully soon

What would be your dream job (not print related)?

Investment banker

What has surprised you most about working in the printing industry? The opportunities and doors that have opened

What could the printing industry be doing more of to entice millennials into print? More flexible working hours
