Winner
Coatings Direct (Bury St Edmunds)

"Bringing print to life" is the motto of this Suffolk-based print finisher and its entry did just that, leaping out at the judges to win the top prize in what was a very closely fought contest. Over the past year, Coatings Direct has invested in plant, people and research and development (R&D). The rewards have been plain to see, with the judges commending the company not only on its "very high quality", but on the strong evidence that it had been working with customers to "move finishing to new levels". However, it's not all about impressing the judges with "innovative and effective materials", as the real rewards have been financial, with the company's most profitable work in the last year coming as a direct result of its commitment to R&D.

Reflections picks up a worthy commendation for its "very creative and technically accurate" work for a wide range of customers. The Deptford-based finisher generated some genuinely "exciting results" by working in co-operation with its customers. Its work on the Villa Cap Ferratt brochure cover stood out in particular as it contained no "traditional" print elements, but consisted of nine different finishing processes, including foiling in seven metallic colours, matt lamination and a UV spot varnish.
