PrintWeek Awards 2013 Trainee of the Year - Callum Shaw, The Website Leeds
Tuesday, October 22, 2013
Callum first became interested in print thanks to a family member waxing lyrical about the industry. However, when he began his apprenticeship at The Website Leeds in January 2012, by his own admission, he knew little of what lay ahead. <br><br>Category sponsor: Heidelberg
18 months later, thanks to his "tireless appetite to learn" he has mastered pre-press, has been trained on the firm’s 12-colour Speedmaster and so impressed production director Martin Rogers that he was asked to help commission the firm’s latest web press. "Callum has grown into a hardworking and committed all-rounder. He has proved how important it is to pass on our knowledge to youngsters," said Rogers.
Billy Gibbs-O’Riordan, Precision Printing
Billy began his Level 2 finishing apprenticeship in January 2012. While his day job is in the bindery, he has used his days off to learn how to operate Precision’s digital presses. In fact he’s already looking forward to the day when he can start passing on his experience to new apprentices.
Phillip Howells, Pensord
Although he started in print in the 1980s, since joining Pensord seven years ago Phillip’s enthusiasm for training has led him to take on an apprentice mentoring role. That inspired him to undertake a two-year Business Improvement Techniques Level 2 NVQ to develop his own career, where he has impressed with "infectious approach to improvement".
