PrintWeek Awards 2013 Catalogue Printer of the Year - The Westdale Press

Judges raved about the "wide variety of techniques for this submission" and with so many extended images, including some straddling different sections, Jacob Delafon's 2013 bathroom brochure relied on several of those techniques from the Cardiff printer - for the first double-page spread, the sheetfed cover was printed first and then the web-fed text section was matched to it.

Category sponsor: Goss International

One challenge was to retain the detail within the white ceramics and maximise the bold colours of the bathroom shots, while not adversely affecting the smoothness and consistency of the neutral backgrounds. Westdale triumphed, as it did for Mark Warner’s Ski Resorts brochure to give the vivid-colour hallmarks of a typical brochure married to a larger-than-usual size with tactile matt coated paper. "The team has demonstrated fantastic variety for this submission," said the judges.

Last year’s winner just missed out this year, but has much to celebrate. The Leicester company has produced the John Lewis Home catalogue for nine years, while its literature for M&S continually conveys top quality. Meanwhile, specialist decorative building materials company Mandarin Stone’s first introduction to web offset printing was smoothed out by a team that has proved beyond doubt this is its forte.
