People Management - winner: CPC Packaging (Bristol)

The judges asked for evidence that business has been improved and benefited by developing and engaging staff. This award covers single projects with a specific aim, and ongoing strategies and people policies

CPC Bristol clearly demonstrated to the judges its outstanding commitment to having best human resources practices in place. It appointed an HR manager in 2008 to identify a strategy to take the company forward.

The manager has developed the firm's HR policies and procedures and produced an employee handbook to communicate employment legislation and best practice to the workforce. To combat the culture of poor attendance a new sickness absence recording method was developed. By introducing the Bradford Points System and conducting return to work interviews sickness levels reduced from 8% in 2007 to 4% in 2008 and are still falling.

The company also strove to improve communication with the workforce, which has resulted in a more open workplace culture.

Training and performance management are high on the agenda for 2009, ensuring that all staff will be equipped with the tools to complete the required tasks and face the challenges of the industry in the future.
