The Printroom brings lamination in-house

The Printroom has reduced its turnaround times after investing £40,000 to bring lamination in-house.

A 40m/min B2 Foliant Taurus 530 NG laminator and Foliant multi-functional Imprinting Unit, supplied by Intelligent Finishing Systems (IFS), was installed at the Liverpool commercial printer’s 929sqm premises in October.

The device has joined a B2 Manroland 500 litho press, a Canon imagePress C7011, a Canon Océ Arizona flatbed printer and two Canon roll-to-roll wide-format printers as well as a Horizon StitchLiner 6000 and a Perfecta 115 guillotine.

The Printroom director Mario Spatuzzi said the company, whose clients include universities, colleges, schools and marketing agencies, was previously spending around £40,000 to £50,000 a year on outsourcing lamination to a local trade finisher.

“We’re doing all lamination in-house now, from SRA3 all the way up to B2.

“We’ve bought from IFS before and they are really good. We did also look around the trade shows to try out a couple of others but because sometimes we’ve got a lot of high-volume lamination, we found that this machine was probably one of the best in its class in terms of speed and setup.”

Managing director David Mann added: “We liked its foiling capability too. This is something we are going to be offering more and more.”

Foliant’s multi-functional Inprinting Unit, which gives the 530 NG its foiling capability, makes the process fast and affordable on short-run and personalised print, in colours such as gold, silver, red and green, as well as a clear gloss for spot varnishing.

“We have already completed some small orders that would have been too expensive if a die was required,” said Mann.

The Printroom was established in 2003 by a team who previously worked together in the print department of a major financial organisation based in Crosby.

The business, which holds Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), ISO 14001 and FSC certification, has 13 staff and turns over around £1.5m.
