SME of the Year: Resource

The Leeds-based company’s strapline is ‘making it happen’ and over the past 12 months it has lived up to the billing.

In 2017, Resource bought Tebays, which operated two business divisions: event management and print management. The idea behind the purchase was to diversify without adding to overheads, while creating a combined service offering and integrated company culture. Resource immediately set about rationalising the business and stripping out duplicate functions. This included transferring all of Tebays’ print assets into Resource to maximise production opportunities. The move paid off for the business, which has continued to enjoy strong growth. Judges said Resource’s entry “stood out”. Worryingly for Resource’s rivals one judge added: “I suspect they might be the ones to beat next year too!”

Highly commended

PH Media

The Roche-based repro company has been supplying clients in the fashion, museum and arts industries high-quality magazines and books for the past 25 years. 14-staff PH Media, which won this award back in 2016, was described by judges as an “outstanding operation, that is clearly very close to its clients enabling it to make swift decisions”.

Printroom Group

The business was founded by Barry Lewington in an old shed behind Bracknell Cattle Market in 1977. As the business grew, his stated aim was to achieve an annual turnover of £3.5m - a milestone that was reached three days after he sadly passed away in August 2018. Following Barry Lewington’s death his son Simon took over the reins as joint managing director of the business and Barry would no doubt be proud to see how the company has continued to grow under his stewardship.
