Smith: prioritising health, harmonisation and happiness in 2023

MetroMail managing director Tim Smith was new to the business in 2022, and with nine months of experience at the mailing house now under his belt he is in fine form to oversee the company's growth plan in 2023.

What positives are you able to draw on from the experiences of 2022?
Joining MetroMail in March this year opened my eyes to how resilient and valuable good people are, and I am proud to say we have an incredible team of good people here.

What trend (business or technology) do you think has been accelerated because of the impact of inflation?
BPO – business process outsourcing with companies going back to basics and focusing on core disciplines/activities by stripping out the likes of mailrooms, response handling and fulfilment.

What do you think will represent the single biggest opportunity for printers in 2023 and why?
Closer to fewer collaborations and partnerships as the spot market capacity further declines and low margin lines are pulled.

What are your hopes for 2023?
Back to basics in personal and business lives for all - Health, Harmonisation and Happiness.

What piece of advice do you wish you had been given in December 2021 to prepare you for the year you’ve just had?
In joining MetroMail in March I still underestimated the level of governance and diligence as being part of a wider Plc. Once acclimatised you appreciate it provides for a structured, stable, and strategic business culture.

What was your word or phrase of the year in 2022?
Deliver Excellence in all that we do.

What, if anything, will you do differently in 2023?
Last year was about understanding the business, its respective strengths, and weaknesses. From a measured base 2023 will significantly be different with new revenue streams and an appropriate but challenging growth plan.

What’s your favourite Christmas cracker joke?
What do you call a reindeer who can't see? - No-eye deer.
What do you call a reindeer with no eyes or legs – Still no-eye deer.

Are you making any New Year's resolutions? If so, what?
Get back to pre-Covid match fit – in all aspects!
