Chair of the recently rebranded Strategic Mailing Partnership's (SMP) expects to see a jump in the number of small firms and start-ups.

What’s at the top of your Christmas wish list this year?
That the world gets to understand how fantastic direct mail is.

What trend (business or technology) do you think 2016 will be remembered for?
Improved and clever use of digital personalisation.

What do you think will represent the single biggest opportunity for printers in 2017 and why?
I think we will see a massive increase in the number of small firms and self-employed people entering the market.

What do you think will represent the single biggest threat for printers in 2017 and why?
Their own lack of ability to market themselves properly. 

What’s the one thing that the industry should do more of, or do better, in 2017?
Marketing.

What was your biggest disappointment in 2016?
The collapse of the charity sector as major mailers. 

What was your highlight of 2016?
The relaunch of the SMP.

What are your hopes for 2017?
That the SMP continues to grow, get stronger and recruit more members.

What was the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
Carpe diem.

What was the most important thing that you learnt in 2016?
I’m not as young as I was!

What if anything will you do differently in 2017?
Try to drink less! 

What’s your favourite Christmas cracker joke?
What do you call 10,000 lawyers at the bottom of the sea?
A good start!

What was the best Christmas present you ever received?
Our first dog – a springer from Battersea Dogs & Cats.
