Nene Packaging invests with EFI Vutek

Nene Packaging has improved the speed and efficiency of the digital side of its business after investing in new equipment.

The 42-staff company installed an EFI Vutek LED GS2000 LX Pro with Ultradrop technology and material edge guides (MEG), Spectrophotometer and Zünd S3 cutter, two months ago.

Family-run Nene Packaging is a screen printer and corrugated board converter and with this latest purchase from EFI Vutek distributor CMYUK, it can now bring its digital print services in-house.

The new kit joins a Topra flexo press and four Svecia 6040 machines. The company makes a turnover of just under £5m.

It produces screen and digitally printed POS displays and corrugated cartons, with owners Rob and Maria Lugmayer having run the Northampton firm since 2003.

Their team covers everything from design, visuals, layout, print, cut, fold, distribution and assembly and is an approved Tesco supplier.

Rob Lugmayer, who paid £270,000 for the new kit, said: “The Vutek is one of the most popular machines in the country and three local printers sing their praises highly.

“We looked at other machines but they were too dear and tied you into expensive maintenance contracts. CMYUK didn't.

“The Vutek opens up other avenues to consider such as posters, window graphics and floor vinyl, which we previously spent about £70,000 a year outsourcing.

“The addition of digital means we can do short runs and take on more business because there are no set-up times or film costs and with the new Zünd there are no tooling costs either. It's ideal.”

The new Vutek's MEG system allows operators to print more accurately on corrugated materials.

It also allows printing on climate- or heat-reactive substrates, ensuring the heads don’t strike the unstable media, saving time and and reducing waste, according to the manufacturer.

CMYUK also supplied Nene with an ex-display Zünd S3 to replace one of the CAD tables, alongside the new EFI Vutek LED GS2000 LX Pro wide-format printer.

“We installed the system in March and we are now up to speed and have the confidence to run in full production mode," said Rob Lugmayer

“The system took about 10 days to install and train and since then we can’t fault it. Digital print runs alongside our existing screen printing operation and fits beautifully into the business.

“We decide if a job's financially viable to put through digital or screen and an colour match almost exactly if we need to split some elements of the POS to print digital or by screen processes.

“We can react more quickly in confidence our digital side will be equal in quality, and in some cases better than our traditional print side, which has always been classed as the best in the business.

“Far from thinking digital technology sounds the death knoll for traditional print, we believe it enhances our business and will equip us to develop new products and grow the business.”
