Marstan Press grows new digital arm with OKI C9650

Marstan Press is pushing for growth in its newly created digital printing operation after "dipping its toes into the water" with an investment in an OKI C9650 colour machine.

The Kent-based printer said it has tapped into the market for on-demand work with the new machine producing jobs such as brochures, flyers and brochures.

Marstan has already been producing a variety of in-store collateral for a large high street bank, including bespoke displays and 200-run DL flyers.

The 50-staff printer has also benefited from the ability to print customised, short-run banners on the C9650, which has helped complement its high-volume litho offering.

Martin Lett Jnr, director at Marstan Press, said: "Most our customers have digital requirements, which we've been able to fulfil but we want to grow that side.

"The fact that we've already outstripped capacity on our first machine reflects the potential digital print has for us."

As well as the recent digital spend, the £4.5m-turnover company has launched an "e-commerce website" that Lett anticipates will simplify the ordering digitally and litho-printed jobs.

He said: "All jobs on ecoprintondemand.co.uk are printed on FSC stocks and we offer fast turnaround times coupled with competitive pricing."

Despite the OKI having only been installed last month, the 55-year-old company is now looking to add a larger digital production machine to help cope with demand.

In addition to increasing its personalisation workload, Lett is also looking into offering a full web-to-print service, which he said will make life for high-volume print customers, "a lot easier".

Lett added: "We anticipate the contribution that digital print will have on our turnover will continue to increase once we invest further."

Last month, Marstan Press completed a £500,000 investment in pre-press and finishing kit with the installation of a Heidelberg Suprasetter 74 platesetter and Prinect workflow.
