Reader Reaction: Is a wage increase reasonable in the current climate?

After the BPIF opposed Unite's wage demands, we ask for your views on pay rises in the sector

Mark Farrimond, managing director, The Envelope Works
“This type of blanket annual pay review that is imposed by the BPIF and Unite is an approach that is out of date in today’s tough economic environment. We prefer to reward staff on an individual basis and base their pay increases on their personal contribution, commitment and value to the business. Naturally, we do have to relate this to the overall performance of the business. However, we have found that in our experience, if you have the right people in your business in the first instance, the two often go hand in hand.”

"One size fit's all" has never worked and hopefully the circumstances the industry now faces will ensure this process will be dispatched to the K-----s Yard from where I spout .Hopefully Tony Burke and his puffed up national executive mates will be joining me soon!!

I hope that each Company embrace the fact that they need to be in a lifeboat that can sustain the gross weight of all it's employees and agree T&C's that achieve this.

I was delighted to hear that a major Company has been tackling their need to reduce costs \(headcount) in a creative, sensible and sensitive manner, congratulations.

Finally does anyone know where the BGP/60 redundancies link can be found?

regards

Doug
