Payout for laid-off B&T staff

Workers who lost their jobs when Butler and Tanner (B&T) closed earlier this year have been awarded £1,200 each by an employment tribunal in Bristol.

Almost 290 staff were put out of work when the book printer was closed by Media & Print Investment (MPI) on 26 April after a dispute with Unite.

However, the union has supported their bid for compensation which was awarded last week. The union said that their members should have received the full 90-day payment but this was reduced as it was to be paid by the state.

In addition, the Butler and Tanner pension fund payments owed will now be paid via the Redundancy Payments Office.

Ann Field of Unite said: "B&T workers believe they deserved more compensation, but this was the maximum award available to the tribunal."

Mr Hart I hope that your comment a big thank you from the tax payers is aimed at Mr Dolan and companies like him and not the people who just happen to work for them without going over the same old ground we were unlawfully sacked. Mr Dolan couldnt even be bothered to turn up at the court I suppose that would have been too much to ask I for one would have loved to hear the answers to some off the questions put before him.

I am sad that yet again the monies have to come from the state but until the law changes and crooks are no longer able to trade under the disguse of directors this will only happen again

On a happier note most of the ex employees have found other employment so yes I suppose we are funding our own compensation by paying our taxes
