The folding stuff & flooding screens

Joanne Gardner tracks down the solutions to your technical troubles

Q I’m trying to find a supplier of Japanese Yuzen origami paper in the UK and was wondering whether you know of a UK manufacturer.
Jane Gates, via email

A As far as I know, Yuzen paper is only manufactured in Japan. The gorgeous paper – which, for those of you who don’t know, features lots of different screen-printed, vintage Japanese-style patterns – pops up in art and crafts shops around the world and I think is actually more in demand outside of Japan, since the popular modern aesthetic in Japan is minimalist. So I can’t see there being a market for British-made Yuzen paper, although I may be proven wrong. Anyway, suppliers here include Roze (roze@roze.co.uk, www.roze.co.uk) and Happy Stampers (www.happystampers.co.uk).

Q I’m a bit of a novice and wondered if you could tell me what happens when maximum ink load is exceeded while printing CMYK?
Name and address supplied

A I’d say you’d be looking at a bad case of flooding and dot gain. You see, if too much ink is used, the fine screens used in CMYK printing, fill up, and, as a result, the dots that create the screen print larger than they should, which changes the colour mix and makes the screened areas appear blotchy or cloudy. Not a very nice effect.

Flexo printer #1

I didn’t quite know what to do with this one as it isn’t a question as such. An enterpising young fellow from Chennai, India, has sent me his resume and it appears he is after a job as a flexo operator. Since he sent his CV to PrintWeek in the UK (and not its sister title in India), I can only assume he wants a job here.

Well, S Naveen Libra looks to me to have excellent qualifications for any flexo operator post and clearly has a good knowledge of our country’s industry, if he’s an avid reader of printweek.com. His most recent posting was as supervisor at Venkateswara Flexo Printers.

Maybe he just fancies a sea-change. Or maybe the climate of his home country has got the better of him and he’s up for some, ahem, less intense, English weather. So if you’re looking for a new flexo operator and fancy sponsoring S Naveen, get in touch with PrintWeek. He gets my vote for his novel approach.
