Tesco recalls beans after packaging glitch

Tesco has admitted a packaging-line glitch caused problems with cans of beans and sausages resulting in a "significant number" being recalled.

Beans and sausages and vegetarian bangers and beans in varying sized cans were recalled after pieces of plastic were found in a small number of the tin containers.

The problem involved production in Italy and the cans had best-before dates of December 2009, according to reports.

"Yes it was a problem with a line, but I have no more details," said a spokeswoman. "The problem has been rectified and everything is now back to normal."

She said Tesco took the "precautionary measure" of recalling the cans "due to possible contamination with large pieces of plastic".

She added all products had been cleared from the shelves and customers who bought affected products should return them to stores for full refunds.

The store gave no further details on the type of problem or the number of cans recalled.
