LG innovates cheaper e-paper

LG Philips has filed a patent application for a new e-paper technology with a glossy finish, using pixels made from oil and water.

Currently, e-paper pixels are made from organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), but they are complex to produce, leading to high costs and frequent defects.

The new product uses oil and water contained in tiny plastic cells connected to plastic electrodes, which scientists predict will be cheaper and more reliable.

The surface is reportedly a high-gloss finish, like a magazine cover.
