E-paper set for newspaper trial in US
E-paper may get its first field test with Hearst Corporation's Seattle Post-Intelligencer in the US.
According to online newspaper CrossCut Seattle, the Seattle Post-Intellingencer will trial the format with a select group of readers over the next two years. Readers will be able to download the latest version of the newspaper from the internet, rather than wait for it to be printed and distributed.
As well as newspapers, Hearst also owns a range of broadcast media divisions, giving it the option of delivering video and other formats to the device.
Hearst also has a minority stake in E Ink, which in turn has been licensed by LG Philips to render colour text and images in its flexible e-paper product.
E Ink boasts a roll call of technology companies among its investors, such as Intel and Motorola. Others include Seattle Times owner The McClatchy Company, Gruppo Espresso, which publishes Italy’s La Repubblica and a range of magazines and local papers, as well as Vivendi.
