TJ turns to VLF Rapidas to add 50% capacity

TJ International is to increase its capacity by half after placing a £3.5m order for two very-large-format KBA Rapida 142 two-colour presses.

The Padstow, Cornwall-based short-run book printer's new B0 presses will replace existing B1 Heidelberg Speedmasters by the end of the year.

TJ International chief executive Angus Clark said: "The two new presses will give us, with additional platesetters and folders, 50% more capacity from the end of this year.

"Fast turnaround books are what we know, what we do well and plan to do even better," he added.

The firm is also looking at the possibility of installing a third KBA press, although no decision has yet been made.

The 145-staff firm, which has a turnover of £10m and produces more than 6m books a year, has also become the first UK printer to buy an Océ VarioPrint 6250.

Clark said: "The trend is to produce more titles digitally in ever-shorter run lengths."
