Fans of print on paper flock to GF Smith event

GF Smith expects well over 3,000 visitors to have attended its Beauty in the Making event by the time the exhibit closes this evening.
The show, held at London venue Victoria House Basement, has been running all week and had attracted almost 2,500 attendees by close of play yesterday. It finishes at 6pm today (27 April).
It features a series of talks and workshops and visitors can try their hand letterpress printing and envelope making. The intricacies of specialist paper making are also explained.
GF Smith joint managing director John Haslam said the response had been overwhelmingly positive. "We are absolutely delighted that so many people have come along to the event, and have engaged in thinking about paper creatively," he said.
Designers, brand owners and printers were among the attendees, and Haslam said some printers had made repeat visits with clients.
GF Smith collaborated with creative agency It’s Nice That and Monotype to bring together the content, with Monotype showing items from its archive that have never been seen in public before, including Eric Gill’s original drawings for Gill Sans.
Downey of London and Norfolk provided the on-site letterpress expertise, using Adana machines supplied by Caslon.
Beauty in the Making also hosted the UK premiere of Linotype: The Film last night, which was a sell-out. It will be shown again at the Ampersand conference in Brighton with screenings on 14 and 15 June. www.linotypefilm.com/screenings.html
