Industry mourns plate pioneer as Kodak's Doyle passes away

Kodak's Graphic Communications Group is mourning the loss of its global plate technology expert Steve Doyle, who died on 1 November, aged 56.

Doyle worked in the printing industry for more than 30 years, bringing his scientific expertise to printing plate development at Howson-Algraphy, DuPont, Horsell, and most recently Kodak.

His career took him around the world and he was instrumental in the development of a number of landmark plate technologies, including Silverlith and Electra.

A colleague described him as: "Undoubtedly a major driving force in the plate industry's transition into the digital age."

UK marketing manager Pat Holloway worked with Doyle for many years and added: "He really was an innovator of thermal CTP technology – he was Mr Thermal, and had such a passionate belief in both CTP and the business.

"He was immensely likeable, with a unique ability to talk about extremely technical things in a way that could be understood by all."

Doyle is survived by his wife Hilary. His funeral was held on Tuesday (10 November). Anyone wishing to make a donation should contact either St Gemma's Hospice in Leeds, or Ward 9 at St James's Hospital, also in Leeds.

People like Steve will be greatly missed. He was extremely helpful always and keen to help. He was a great ambassador for Kodak and was one of the pivotal figures in the adoption of CtP in all technologies. He was one of the few people who knew all that was to be known about plates and plate imaging and was a key for Kodak in establishing their major position in CtP today.

I've just opened PrintWeek and read of the sad death of Steve, I am totally shocked.

When my colleagues and I developed the CCDot plate reader, Steve was one of the first to see its potential and opened doors for me all around the world.

I well remember the good times we all had with Creo doing a tour of football stadiums to promote the then new Electra plate and since then we always shared a laugh and had a chat at major print shows.

Knowing his background at Howson's and Horsell's the industry really has lost one of the greatest plate pioneers.

RIP - Steve
