Ipex 2010 could be 'most important ever'
Ipex 2010 "could be the most important Ipex ever", according to show president and Heidelberg UK managing director George Clarke.
Speaking as organiser IIR unveiled its visitor promotion plans, along with a host of recession-busting savings to help exhibitors cut costs, Clarke said: "Could the timing of Ipex 2010 be any better?
"The innovations seen at Drupa will have become a reality, but more important is the economic cycle. The downturn actually began two years ago, and it’s likely we will see recovery by next May."
The last Ipex in 2006 was held in April, but by pushing the 2010 show back into May, the organisers hope the timeframe will work better for both exhibitors and visitors by avoiding the Easter holiday.
"While nobody knows what the economic climate will be next year, there are signs of recovery in some areas and we hope to see the investment drought relax as we move towards Ipex," said event director Trevor Crawford.
Crawford said that while some exhibitors had downsized their stand space, most of the industry’s major suppliers had committed to being at the event and the exhibition overall was in "comparatively good shape".
He added: "It’s clear that the credit crunch is affecting the whole industry, so we’ve been working closely with the venue, as well as our key suppliers and partners, to come up with a choice of discounted options that will provide real savings and greater efficiencies for our exhibitors.
"A strong Ipex helps to reignite the industry and is good for every one of us."
Ipex 2010 is due to be held on 18-25 May, 2010, at the Birmingham NEC.

There's enough nearly new kit sitting idle at knock down prices at the moment to satisfy the next 5 years.
Ipex might be a nice day in Brum though ?
Edna Bag - 04 June 2009
Could be most important for who Heidelberg? PM has a point with the amount of 'nearly new' kit on the market, maybe Heidelberg should be considering a 'scrappage' scheme to encourage new machine sales, how about 'bogof', difficult to see why anyone would want to improve efficiency or capacity.
Still have some nice new digital presses to peruse, may as well get used to the next range of dull grey lifeless boxes and theres always the bar. A fine day out.
Bill Cheesman - 05 June 2009
Maybe the most important part of Ipex could be the meeting of minds from the PrintWeek Forums. How about it guys and gals?
Mick Hart - 05 June 2009
A bit early yet to make long term plans like that Bill - by then might be working a check-out, don't know if Morrisons allow days off to visit shows, or how good their expenses accounts are. In principal a good idea though.
Matt Whipp - 05 June 2009
It might be quite a nice idea to have a forum meetup if there's enough of us up at Ipex. Anyone with a pseudonym has to bring a clue as to their online moniker, don't you think.
Jon Fennell - 05 June 2009
Sounds like a plan, red roses in teeth it could be then
Matt Whipp - 05 June 2009
We would also have to instigate a "what goes on in Ipex, stays in Ipex" rule - not to cover anything untoward, but to at least allow anyone that blows their cover at the meetup to remain anonymous on the forums. No outings!
Mick Hart - 05 June 2009
Suggest picking a time and place, and getting a list of 'interested parties' together. As for reconising attendees, surely that would be easy, although Edna might be a problem without the ***. I agree, a gentlemans/ladies agreement as to anonymity might be appropriate. Perhaps disguises could be worn?
Mick Hart - 05 June 2009
How on earth does 'cigarette' get edited?
Bill Cheesman - 05 June 2009
Just spoken to Morrisons - they'll let you go but you have to take it as holiday. See you all there people. I'm going even if I'm out of the business by then
Matt Whipp - 05 June 2009
I'm guessing you wrote f-a-g - our forum software takes the moral high ground where it can.
Matt Whipp - 05 June 2009
Oh and let's do the list first, then decide where. After all, we might have to hire another hall in the NEC if it's that popular...
Jon Fennell - 05 June 2009
Matt its sad but we could be the only attendees, just appoint a bar
Matthew Parker - 05 June 2009
I suspect Ipex will be important for workflow and Web2Print rather than presses.
A forum meet-up msounds like an excellent idea!

I will be there you can easily identify me as I will be looking for the Goss 5000 stand, otherwise I will blow in your ear, not a mighty wind just a little puff
Jo Francis - 05 June 2009
TMW, if we're lucky they might bring a unit. I seem to recall Heidelberg doing something similar with the M4000 which seemed big at the time.

Yeah I think they did, I definitely remember the unit from the 72pp by Man Roland (06) and vaguely remember looking at the sunday technology that was there. Can you pull any strings Jo?

I'll wear my usual disguise - no-one will recognise me then. (Jon, it has nothing to do with *** pumps!)

TMW I'll do my best. At the very least they should bring one of those eye-popping printing plates along.
Mick Hart - 08 June 2009
I assume someone responsible will compile a list and keep us up to date. I'm in, do we know anyone responsible between us?

Happy to do it if you want me to
Matt Whipp - 08 June 2009
I'm happy to take on the onerous task of list management. What's the feeling on venue? We'd be happy to host on the PrintWeek stand perhaps late in the afternoon on one of the days and supply a few beers, or does an off-site venue appeal more? Is there a day that everyone is going on and will be free? I suspect the first day everyone may be there but extremely busy.
Jon Fennell - 08 June 2009
PW stand sounds best bet to me, will fit in with evryone else diariesPaul Sherfield - 08 June 2009
Have you all checked out the hotel prices in Birmingham for the IPEX week!!!! What credit crunch!! So the beers will have to be on PrintWeek
Bill Cheesman - 09 June 2009
We stayed at the Premier Inn last time, it was quite reasonable and not too far away
(About 60 quid a night)
Jon Fennell - 09 June 2009
There are quite a few Premier's, IBIS, Travelodge sitting in Coventry and Rugby very close to M6/A45, IBIS at j18/M1 could be worth a try as wellNick Craig Waller - 09 June 2009
Just to respond to some of those points above:
> A forum sounds like a great idea and I would look into trying to provide you with a suitable room at the NEC – just let me know what date and for how many people. Matt, perhaps we could have an off-line chat? Also, please remember that pre-registering for Ipex is free: www.ipex.org/register
> Regarding accommodation go to www.ipex.org/accommodation where you will find a link to our approved hotel agents who can negotiate the best prices that suits different prices and tastes plus a link to a list of hotels offering added value incentives. Another 2 great websites to look at is www.ipexinbirmingham2010.com and www.ipex.org.uk
Andrew Moss - 10 June 2009
Last year went to Drupa in the Motorhome - great facilities for these things in Dusseldorf. If the NEC/IPEX have similar set up I could invite a few round for a party afterthe meet and close friends could even crash at my place! No pants outside trousers though....
Jo Francis - 10 June 2009
Re A Moss @ drupa in motorhome, I am SO envious!
I started out with a plan to rent a motorhome and do that, but didn't get it together in time. I'm sure it would be a complete hoot.
Here's hoping there are some facilities/a suitable field within striking distance of the NEC.
Alternatively, I just bought a nice two-person pop-up tent, and I know Matt W has one of those portable butane cooker thingies.
It could be like "Five go mad in a tent" with lashings of ginger beer. Oh, and more than five...
giggle
Jo
Edna Bag - 10 June 2009
Glad you said more than 5, we could have a girly pj party and play kiss and tell, waddya think, I might take the f.a.g. out of me mouth for some action. If Matt has a portable stove i'll be alright for clean undies, don't mind using the same boiling pot.
I'm in, it'll be so much fun
Ipexia Brum - 12 June 2009
go to www.unofficialipex.com there is a forum there I will set up a discussion called meeting up - so people can arrange. This IS UNOFFICIAL !!!
Lesley Beckley - 12 June 2009
I Matt and all, I am in. I think it is a great idea.
Mick Hart - 12 June 2009
My mum alway told me not to talk to strangers, and I tell my kids not to talk to anyone they don't know on the internet, let alone the absolute no-no of meeting anyone thay have spoken to - what an example we are leading with! So who is Ipexia Brum, (Anagram Expelair Bu'm by the way - good one) Are they to be trusted? Will they lead the revengeful/admiring crowds when they mob us all at Ipex - do I wish to make my arrangements known to them? Answers on a postcard please!

Been to the site they've quoted and frankly would rather stay on this one. Nothing wrong with it per se, but I feel I am with chums here (well mostly anyway)
Edna Bag - 12 June 2009
Arrrrr, Willy thats nice, like a large scale Butch Cassidy and the Sundnace Kid, we all rush through the doors of IPEX together and get shot by an angry crowd.
